Flickerfest 2007 Programme Calendar

Documentary Workshop - George Gittoes for Documentary Masterclass

Flickerfest is presenting a workshop at this year's festival with Australian independent Doco director George Gittoes. His most recent film RAMPAGE is screening across Australia and internationally and has been described as a journey into the forbidden zones; - America's war in Iraq, and in its own backyard - life in a Miami hood. It is an exploration of hip hop's musical innovations, as important as the field hollers, the blues, and jazz, which also began in the black ghettos, and then went on to evolve as major music styles.

Highly esteemed documentary director George Gittoes will take you on a journey through his body of work from idea to image to the completed project. His award winning docos include SOUNDTRACK TO WAR, which is a remarkable documentary about the Iraq war. It first screened MTV and VH1 in the US to over 87 million people and was the first film to be released internationally that investigated the life of soldiers during the Iraq war. He followed this up with RAMPAGE which draws parallels between political dissent and the musical form. It is a recurring theme in George Gittoes work that Musical culture and particularly Rap music is a major tool for political expression in a period of war.

This workshop is a must for anyone wanting to explore and discuss the role of the documentary in creating dynamic and provocative ideas for a new generation. George will be joined by his son and co-collaborator Harley Gittoes in presenting this workshop and discussing the liberating influence of new technologies in creating Super Docs for worldwide dvd and theatrical release through independent marketing strategies.
